A new call has been published by the AICS Kampala Office under the Emergency Initiative – Call for Proposals I – “Regional Crisis Response Intervention in the Great Lakes Region: Uganda and Burundi.”
Uganda is currently the leading refugee-hosting country in Africa, hosting over 1.9 million refugees, approximately 60% of whom come from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). According to estimates published by UNHCR in September 2025, more than 73,000 people have entered Uganda from the DRC since the first months of the current year alone.
Although Burundi does not have the same reception capacity as Uganda, it is heavily affected by the refugee crisis in the Great Lakes region. According to recent UNHCR data, the country hosts over 110,000 refugees and asylum seekers from the DRC, while more than 200,000 Burundian citizens remain refugees abroad.
